Our top Rental home tips:
How to get the best rental value:
- Summer months are high season in the New Bern area. To get the best rental home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local New Bern area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to pick the best vacation home in the New Bern area:
- First, have your group select dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Beach Villa with Tropical Pool has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before you book the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is best for your vacation.
- If there's a certain New Bern attraction you are crazy about, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- If your family is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
