Getting the best vacation rental experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the New Bern area. To get the best value, consider changing your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites often offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select a group lead, choose your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Ocean Front Cottage with Mother-in-law Suite has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is best for your vacation group.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
  • Lock your rental while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • To make sure damages are not attributed to your visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon check in. Contact the property manager immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected everything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
