Sticking to a rental home budget:
- In the New Bern area, The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your rental property six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- June, July, and August are high season in Emerald Isle. To get the largest vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Owners sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.

- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to drive new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
