Strategies to get the perfect rental experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in the New Bern area. To find the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have deals for local accommodations and attractions.

How to choose the best vacation home in the New Bern area:

  • First, have your family decide on date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Beach Life Down, Oceanview Duplex in Atlantic Beach, NC! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. Otherwise, call the property management company before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your vacation family.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or may be applied to your invoice.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

More tips for your visit:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
