Strategies for getting the perfect New Bern vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your rental home budget:

  • The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the New Bern area. Booking in Fall or Spring months is an excellent way to save on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local New Bern visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your Search:

  • Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Oceanfront Complex, First Floor Southwinds, Ocean & Sound Views, 2 Pools! has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If not, contact the property management company before reserving your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the host's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Keep your property safe!
  • Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to drive future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
