Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your spending budget:
- In the New Bern area, The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked early. Reserving your rental home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring months is a great way to save on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area travel guide magazines which often include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- First and foremost, have your group choose date ranges and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Second row, ocean view duplex w/ easy beach access has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern vacation rental search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property management company before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
- Visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Know before you go:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
- Lock your vacation home while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- During check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
