Our top Vacation rental home tips:

Sticking to your rental home budget:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the best vacation home for your budget, we recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at New Bern restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on local tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select vacation week and max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. OCEAN FRONT COMPLEX WITH GREAT OCEAN VIEW has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's a certain New Bern destination you are crazy about, look for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge additional pet fees.

More tips for your visit:

  • Get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Record any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few difficulties.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Keep your property safe!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
