Tips and Tricks to get the very best vacation home experience:
When to visit Emerald Isle & When to reserve a rental home:
- In the New Bern area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Hosts sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have deals for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking the rightrental home:
- First, have your family agree to a vacation week and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. See the Waves Crashing! 7 Night Min. In Season, 3 Night Min. Off Season has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern vacation rental search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before booking the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific New Bern attraction you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Considerations for your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would at home.
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. text the host immediately to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to drive future reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
