Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect New Bern rental experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in Emerald Isle. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Some owners offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.
How to pick the best vacation home:
- Select dates and spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Serendipity, Oceanfront House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking pages. If not, call the property manager before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Tips for your stay:
- Take a copy of the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect your property!
- Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
