Tricks and tips for getting the perfect vacation home experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is an excellent way to save on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property managers typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area travel guides which often include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning and choosing your prefect New Bern rental home:

  • First, have your family commit to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. The Blue Dolphin has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you reserve the home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Tips to have a great stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute is filed.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to compel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
