Strategies to get the best vacation property experience:
Finding the best rental home value:
- Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain money saving offers on local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- First, have your family decide on dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. The Grey Goose (Waterfront) Historic New Bern - Private Beach - BRING YOUR BOAT! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before reserving the home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- If there's a particular New Bern attraction you love, search for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
More tips for your stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your smartphone.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- At departure, take a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
